Today American Airlines becomes the first airline to directly connect travelers from the United States with the San Andrés archipelago, operating twice a week in an Embraer 175 aircraft, with capacity for 75 passengers.

"We are excited to start our seventh route between Colombia and the United States," said Omar Nottaro, Director of Operations at American for Colombia and Ecuador. "With this new destination, Colombia consolidates itself as the second country in the region with the largest number of operations."

Currently, American operates in the cities of Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Pereira and now in San Andrés, connecting the country with three destinations in the United States- Miami (MIA), New York (JFK) and Dallas/Fort Worth. (DFW)- through 18 daily flights.

Facing this milestone, Flavia Santoro, president of ProColombia —the government entity in charge of promoting tourism in Colombia— said that the airline's announcement benefits the country's tourist revival: “American Airlines continues to give us good news. During 2021, its air capacity has increased, connecting the United States with several of our charming destinations, including San Andrés, which is, according to the 2021 World Travel Awards, the Best Sun and Beach Destination in South America.”

“This confirms that the recovery of air connectivity in Colombia continues to break records and that international airlines place their trust in our country as they recognize us as an attractive place for travellers”, adds Santoro.

For his part, the governor of the island, Everth Hawkins, referred to the arrival of the airline “For the first time an airline will connect San Andrés directly with Miami, which shows great confidence in the Colombian market, and it is a boost to the local travel and tourism industry, trade and investment between both countries”.

Finally, this new flight will offer international visitors, as well as San Andres residents, connection options through the American hub at Miami International Airport (MIA), with the possibility of connecting travelers from the island with 140 destinations around the world.
