The reactivation of tourism continues to increase with occupancy in hotel accommodation in Colombia of 40.8%, between January and December 2021, that is, 10.9 percentage points above 2020, according to the most recent figures released by DANE and analyzed by the Office of Economic Studies of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism.
The highest occupations between January and December occurred in destinations such as San Andrés with 63.2%; Cartagena with 51.7% and the rest of the Caribbean with 46.5%.
At the same time that occupancy increased, hotel revenues improved in 2021. According to official figures, these reported an increase of 100.2%, with greater growth in tourist destinations such as San Andrés and Providencia, with 176.9% and in the Gulf of Morrosquillo and Sabana Sucreña, with 131.8%.
"These figures confirm that the recovery of tourism in the country is advancing with firm steps and that the policies, strategies and projects that we have led from the National Government strengthen the sector as a great driver of the Colombian economy", assured the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, María Ximena Lombana Villalba.
The main reason for guests to travel in this period was leisure with 58.2%, followed by business with 34.6%; health with 2.6% and other reasons with 2.2%.
However, it should be noted that hotel occupancy in the month of December was 54.4%, that is, 4.6 percentage points above the same month in 2019, thus exceeding the pre-pandemic figures and glimpsing the consolidation of the safe economic reactivation of tourism.
